Every year there are a good number of movies that are released, enjoyed and viewed by many. The year of 2013 is packed to the brim with highly anticipated films like “Iron Man 3″, “The Wolverine” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”. Year after year, phenomenal movies are released, but relatively few films are actually able to reach a great worldwide box office gross, with only 15 movies to ever pass the $1 billion mark at the box office. So year in and year out, hardcore movie fanatics, like myself, try to figure out which films have the possibility of reaching that $1 billion mark, and in 2013 several movies have a great chance of reaching that number. Even though we are five months into the year of 2013, most of the movies that have a real chance of reaching that $1 billion mark have yet to be released. Down below is a list of movies that have the biggest chance of reaching and passing the $1 billion mark, according to The Hergula.
5. Star Trek Into Darkness
Considering that J.J. Abrams´ directed “Star Trek” (2009) earned $385 million at the box office, “Star Trek Into Darkness” might actually have a chance of reaching $1 billion. I have to admit that when the film was announced, I felt like it would barely interest anyone, yet after the trailers and the way they have advertised the film, I have to say that I was wrong. The sequel has been made more suitable for regular moviegoers and it looks like a true summer blockbuster. Not only that but “Star Trek Into Darkness” has been promoted extremely well, with the look and the feel of the movie being much darker than in “Star Trek” (2009). While the chances of the film earning $1 billion are slim, I feel that due to the sequel being released so many years later, many will most likely find interest in it more so than if the film would´ve been released only a year later. With a much larger scale, bigger budget and good advertising, I feel that “Star Trek Into Darkness” has a chance of earning $1 billion at the box office.
4. Man of Steel
When it comes to previous Superman films, some have had success, like “Superman” (1978) which earned $300 million. While other films like “Superman IV: The Quest For Peace” earned only $15 million at the box office. I think that it´s safe to say that it´s time for one spectacular Superman film, and I believe that with the help of Christopher Nolan, who brought us “The Dark Knight” trilogy, “Man of Steel” will be able to earn $1 billion worldwide. Not only is Superman one of the most beloved comic book characters to ever be created, but “Man of Steel” seems to be a very realistic Superman film, with a lot of thought put behind character development and storytelling. “Man of Steel” has a phenomenal cast, something that will most likely help the movie to earn more, and with the year already packed to the brim with superhero movies, there is no doubt that “Man of Steel” has a decent chance of reaching $1 billion at the box office.
3. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
I don´t have to be a fan of “The Hunger Games” to be able to admit that the sequel to the first film, will most likely earn $1 billion worldwide. Considering the fact that the first film was able to earn $691 million at the box office, I feel that the sequel will pass that number without breaking a sweat. The first trailer for “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” was recently released and it blew up immediately. The film has a completely different feel to it, a different setting and it looks like all the questions everybody had at the end of the first film, will be answered in the sequel. The biggest reason I feel that “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” will be able to earn $1 billion at the box office, is because it is based on Suzanne Collins´ novel of the same name. Not only did the first film earn nearly $700 million, but it gained fans that have never read the novels before, making it very likely that the film could earn $1 billion worldwide, thanks to the fans it gained.
2. Iron Man 3
After the success of “The Avengers” which earned $1.5 billion, making it the third highest grossing film in the world, It would not surprise me whatsoever if “Iron Man 3″ would earn $1 billion at the box office. Not only that but “Iron Man” (2008) earned $585 million at the box office, with the sequel earning $623 million, which shows that even before “The Avengers” Iron Man films were doing well. “Iron Man 3″ has a lot of things going for it as it is not only a summer blockbuster, but it looks visually stunning and has a completely new director that has given the third film a completely different feel, something that will surely intrigue moviegoers around the world. Superhero craze is at an all time high and let’s be honest, who doesn´t like Robert Downey Jr.? He is the perfect actor to play Tony Stark/Iron Man and his charisma alone oozes off the big screen making everybody cheer when he does something heroic and sob when something bad happens to him. With a great cast, darker theme and unstoppable momentum, I´m almost completely sure that “Iron Man 3″ will pass the $1 billion mark at the box office
1. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is one of the most succesful movie trilogies to ever be created, largely because of its worldwide box office success. “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” earned more than $1 billion at the box office, making it the sixth highest grossing film of all time. “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” was also able to pass the $1 billion mark, so if the statistics and numbers alone say anything, it is that “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” has an incredibly good chance of reaching the $1 billion mark at the box office. While the film has yet to receive a trailer, I´m sure that when it gets released, people around the world will go crazy with joy just to be able to visit Middle-Earth once more. Even if the first film did get some mediocre reviews, it was still received very well. “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” will most likely feel like the first film, which is a good thing as it mixed humor together with deep storytelling near perfectly. Not only that but thanks to the success of LOTR and “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, I feel that any upcoming movie from both series will definitely be loved. So if there is one movie I feel will definitely earn $1 billion at the box office, it would have to be “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”.
