Matt Damon’s “Elysium” Role Was Offered to Eminem First
In a recent interview with Wired, Neill Blomkamp revealed that he approached two other men before even talking to Matt Damon about starring in “Elysium”. One of them being a South African rapper named Ninja, and the other being Marshall Mathers the third, known worldwide as Eminem.
Director Neill Blomkamp approached Ninja, who turned down the opportunity to star in “Elysium”, saying that he didn’t want his first film role to be in a prominent American film, playing an American character. Not only that but Ninja said: “It was a f*cked-up, difficult decision”, in his interview with Wired.
Neill Blomkamp then decided to contact his second choice, who was non other than Eminem, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest musicians of all time. Marshall Bruce Mathers III reportedly agreed to star in the film but only if it would be shot in Detroit. That made Blomkamp approach his third choice for the film, Matt Damon, who was impressed with the vision for the film, and agreed to star in it.
Now while this is the first we have heard about this, it sure does make you look at Neill Blomkamp’s “Elysium” in a whole different way, knowing now that the role was first offered to South African rapper Ninja, and then to Eminem. While both men had their individual reasons for not wanting to star in the film, they seem quite petty and silly, considering the opportunity.
Neill Blomkamp written and directed “Elysium”, starring Matt Damon, is set to be released on August 9, 2013.
