Gundam SEED Destiny HD Remaster – What Might and Should Change (Pros & Cons)
Several months ago it was announced that “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny” will be receiving the HD Remaster treatment, in the same fashion as “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED” did. While for some it might´ve come as a surprise, it was always expected that after the Gundam Seed HD Remaster, Gundam Seed Destiny would also be receiving the same treatment. “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED” receiving the HD Remaster never really shocked me, as the flaws in the animation could be seen early on as Kira Yamato did not start looking like the Kira we all love and recognize today, before half of the first season had been aired, same could be said about a dozen of other characters/locations. Not only did they fix the animation issues and converted the entire season into High-Definition, they also changed some minor scenes and added new ones to make the show even better. While some of the changes were frowned upon, it is safe to say that thanks to the changes in animations and a couple of added scenes, it was still a succesful project.
Now it is time for “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny” to get the HD Remaster treatment, something I´m wholeheartedly looking forward to. While most of us already know that the show will be converted into High-Definition and some small animation errors will be fixed, the biggest question is “What and how much will be changed?”. Even though Gundam Seed Destiny received multiple awards, was loved in Japan and was praised by critics everywhere, there is still a number of people who dislike Gundam Seed Destiny.
The main reasons “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny” was disliked; stock footage, the way some characters survive is unrealistic and Shinn Asuka supposedly losing the “lead character” status half-way through the season. While I feel that some Gundam fans are just being overly dramatic, the stock footage was never that huge of a problem because most of the times they used stock footage was when the Mobile Suits were doing, what I like to call, their signature pose. While stock footage was most definitely used, it was far from a serious issue. The way some characters survived did bother me, there was never an explanation given how Mu La Flaga survived at the end of Gundam Seed and how Athrun Zala together with Meyrin Hawke survived Shinn´s attack. If a more detailed explanation would be given, it would surely please Gundam fans around the world.
Last but not least, Shinn Asuka losing the lead character status is something that has been debated on forums since the end of Gundam Seed Destiny´s original television run. Shinn Asuka did start off as the lead character, then the attention shifted to Athrun Zala and at the end of the series, the lead character was Kira Yamato. While tons of people have an issue with it, I hardly see a problem in the series changing the lead character throughout the show. As far as I´m concerned, all three characters were lead characters at one point or another. So if they would just stop using the stock footage in the HD Remaster, explain how some characters are able to survive certain death and give better character development to Shinn, the problems would more or less be resolved.
“Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny” HD Remaster will begin streaming on Bandai Channel service March 29, 2013. The series is also slated to start running on BS11 on April 7 and on Tokyo MX TV on April 9. Gundam Seed Destiny HD Remaster Blu-ray discs will include english subtitles.
